Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood?
Baci chocolates are a Christmas staple in my childhood and I have continued it yearly.
As the youngest of 3 girls, I fought for attention but every Christmas my father bought at least 1 Large Baci from our local Italian Deli.
Baci are chocolates with hazelnuts individually wrapped in this beautiful silver wrapper. The stories was each chocolate had a Baci message, like a fortune cookie, but with it in Italian and English.
The messages were about love ❤️ because these chocolates were used for forbidden lovers to send messages to each other. How Romeo and Juliet minus the deaths, right? Baci lovers must have been more plump but still it’s a romantic story.
I have videos of Christmas of me throwing up the baci in the air, as if these chocolates were part of a 3 ring circus.
Later in life, I bought a tin from Michael’s that says love and I put every love message I eat for 20 years. When I moved, I downsized and kept the best messages and randomly put them in my robes, wallet and car so that if the message falls out, I’m instantly transported to my childhood and those delightful memories of me throwing up the tiny pieces of heaven and freezing time. So Baci, isn’t just a chocolate, Baci is my childhood wrapped up in love notes and it was sweet.
