Do you remember life before the internet?
To be honest, I don’t. I equate it, in my head, to the black and white Wizard of Oz and the colorized movie after the witch is dead and the tornado has landed.
The internet gave us power and choices on how to buy products, save on gas, and a means to isolate. There are pros and cons to both.
Personally, webmd has the most hits when the internet appeared. I am not a hypochondriac, but I’ve had medical issues all my life and nobody to advocate but myself. The internet allowed me to self diagnose and drive my doctors insane. Once they publish my blood results, I’m googling everything. I’ve died a million times but I did diagnose one of my ailments by using the notes section on my iPhone. I added my symptoms and although googling them helped, a doctor needed to diagnose my Rheumatoid Arthritis. At 16, we had no internet but I had a swollen knee joint and no doctor addressed it. So, doctors needed to be on their toes since the World Wide Web created a web of strong people sick of being sick.
Also, the internet and apps like Target, keep track of all your receipts and returns are easy. I tend to shop at places that have apps and can buy things online if it’s not in the store. Amazon is the Mufasa of how powerful the internet is. You can’t beat their prices and for people who are disabled, the is the holy grail.
Times are more hectic and crazy but if you choose to use the internet for good and not bad, then you should be ok.
I’m not a fan of AI but hopefully it won’t affect me too much since I’m over the hill and at the point in my life that I like things simple and I do what brings me joy.
Remember, you can put the phone down and even use airplane mode when you’re not in an airplane and need to disconnect.
I lived in a time of Encyclopedia Britannica, Pagers, and Walkmans and life was good.
My first relationship was with my mailman and it was pure bliss. Technology was just starting but watching Saturday Night Live (and it was Live) was something I loved staying up late for. Good times and good memories.
